Dirol Don’t Drop

Every year, approximately 1,400 tons of used chewing gum end up on the ground. It can be found almost anywhere—except in trash bins. This annoys everyone. The Dirol Don’t Drop project aims to change the situation. As part of the project, designer Shane Gonzales and footwear customizer Maggie created a limited collection of sneakers made with recycled chewing gum. Only 120 pairs were produced, and they will be awarded to the most active participants of the Dirol Don’t Drop campaign—those who start throwing their gum in trash bins and inspire others to do the
same.

The project’s symbol is a character inspired by the classic trash icon. It delicately spits gum into a trash bin rather than onto the ground, unlike thousands of people who, unfortunately, do the latter. The symbol itself visually demonstrates the need to change this habit. Supporting the logo is a dense urban typography featuring a color palette of asphalt gray and fluorescent green, paired with a custom pattern that subtly references gum stuck to
surfaces.
